Glossary · The language of emBaliment

The Word - embaliment, a new word for what Bali does to you

embaliment
/ɛmˈbɑːlɪmənt/ · n.
Coined by LeMatt (Matteo Fieni) · Ubud, Bali · 2026 · first recorded use
em- (Latin in-, into) + Bali + -ment (Latin -mentum, the resulting state) - formed on the model of embodiment.
em·body·ment  (embodiment)
em·Bali·ment  (embaliment)
The slow process by which Bali stops being a place you visit and becomes part of who you are. It happens over years, without announcement - the island works into the way a person lives, and does not leave when they do.
"She had lived in Ubud for three years before the embaliment began - not as an event, but as a recognition. The island did not announce itself. It simply became indistinguishable from her."
A word enters a language when enough people need it and no existing word will do. embaliment was first recorded in Ubud, 2026. Like serendipity or wanderlust before it, it has only one ambition - to become indispensable, used without attribution, until the day it belongs to the language itself.
Beneath it, an older root - balm: to preserve, to keep in memory, to keep unchanged. From Balm →
Origin
Most invented words are jokes - a sound, a pun tossed into conversation, gone by the next sentence. This one arrived the same way, in play, on the move, far from here. But it was kept. Its author, who had spent a working life giving form to names in Switzerland, Italy and France, recognised something the others lacked and chose to cultivate it rather than let it fall. It was carried to Bali, written down, and made real - because a thing followed with patience, for long enough, tends to arrive. Not found. Kept on purpose.

Having completed - or having been substantially marked by - the process. A condition, not a destination. "You can recognise an embalied person by what they no longer need to explain."
embalying

Actively in the process. The uncertain, fertile middle ground between arrival and belonging. "He was still embalying - asking the right questions for the first time."
embalic

Of or relating to the quality produced by embaliment. A sensibility, a way of seeing, a particular quietness. "There is something embalic in the way she listens - she hears what is not said."

Balinese terms · The philosophical vocabulary of the island
Taksu
Balinese · n.
The divine energy that enters a person wholly present in what they do. Presence, more than talent or technique - what this island teaches, if you stay long enough to learn.
Sekala · Niskala
Balinese · n. pair
The visible and the invisible - not opposites but layers of the same reality. Sekala is what can be seen and measured. Niskala is what cannot. Balinese life moves between both without contradiction.
Tri Hita Karana
Balinese · philosophy
The three causes of well-being: harmony with the divine, harmony with other people, harmony with nature. Not a philosophy to study - an architecture to inhabit. The structural principle behind Balinese community life.
Rwa Bhineda
Balinese · philosophy
The principle of duality as order - not conflict. Day and night, sacred and profane, mountain and sea. The tension between opposites is not a problem to solve but the engine of existence.
Panganjali
Balinese · gesture
The gesture of meeting - hands pressed together, a slight bow. Not merely a greeting but an acknowledgement: the divine in me recognises the divine in you. The correct way to enter a space, begin a conversation, close a ceremony.
Odalan
Balinese · n.
The birthday of a temple - a periodic return to the sacred centre. Every temple celebrates its odalan according to the Balinese calendar. Not a fixed date but a living cycle. The island does not have a linear calendar - it has a spiral one.
Balian
Balinese · n.
The healer who knows both worlds - Sekala and Niskala. Not a doctor, not a shaman in the Western sense. Someone who can read what is invisible and translate it into action in the visible. Consulted for illness, for decisions, for ceremonies.
Karma Pala
Balinese · philosophy
The law of cause and consequence - not punishment but precision. Every action has a weight. What you do here, in this island, in this life, has a specificity that the Balinese take seriously. Living well is not moral - it is structural.
The concept

Cultural integration in Bali - emBaliment

emBaliment is a state, not a service.
The quiet, irreversible work of becoming somewhere - and someone different because of it.

"Bali does not change you. It reveals what was already there, waiting."

Rwa Bhineda
The island holds its opposites without resolving them: sacred and profane, mountain and sea. That unresolved tension is what drives it.
Rwa Bhineda
The duality
All opposites held in balance - light and shadow, the seen world and the unseen.
Tri Hita Karana
Three harmonies: with the gods, with people, with the earth. You don't adopt it as a belief; you live inside it.
Tri Hita Karana
The harmony
Three causes of wellbeing: harmony with the divine, with nature, and with each other.
Taksu
The radiance that arrives when a person is fully present in their work - the thing beneath skill and discipline.
Taksu
The radiance
The divine energy that enters a person wholly present in what they do.

The arc
I · Switzerland
Two decades in the image

A visual artist and creative director trained in Milan and Lugano. Over twenty years he built Opening into a production house that turned ideas into films, campaigns, and objects of attention. The work always circled one thing, even when it looked like many: how a person comes to see.

II · Drive Awake
From the image to attention

Then a national Swiss project on sleep and the driving mind. a public study of what attention is and what happens when it fails. The subject was no longer the image. It had become consciousness itself.

III · Ubud, 2025
The same question, from the body

Then Bali - a continuation, not an escape. The question Drive Awake asked from the side of the mind, the island asks from the side of the body. What it means to be present. What remains when you stop performing.

IV · emBaliment
Where the two worlds meet

Europe and the island, the mind and the body, twenty years of looking and one new word for what happens when a place stops being a destination. The asset and the author are one.

June 2026

Bali does not let you be vague. The island asks, quietly and without urgency, what you are actually here for - not the work you brought, but you. That question is the beginning of everything we are building.

LeMatt · Ubud
May 2026

This is a recognition, not a launch - of the people who are already here, who arrived not because Bali was fashionable but because they had no other honest answer to the question the island was asking.

LeMatt · Ubud
April 2026

There is a Balinese concept called Taksu. It sits beneath talent and discipline: what remains when you stop performing and simply do. Bali teaches it by insistence rather than instruction. The island will not let you be elsewhere.

LeMatt · Ubud
The mark

A small diagram of the idea

Every sign here was made slowly, and means something. The mark is the shape of what the word describes, not a logo to be recognised.

At the centre, a single point of gold: the bindu. The seed, the origin, the still point from which form unfolds. It does not glow; it simply is.

Two arcs hold the point. The lower arc is Sekala, the seen world - the visible, the life you can touch. The upper arc is Niskala, the unseen - the part of a place felt rather than observed. To embali is to let the two meet.

The arcs follow the golden proportion, phi - the measure of a shell, a leaf, the turn of a wave. Proportion here is a way of saying the idea has a form.

The letterforms owe a debt to the clarity of Bruno Monguzzi. The living field of characters owes its movement to Andreas Gysin. We name them because origin matters.
